Improvised Stories w/ Drums & Keys

Where every performance is a unique journey—never rehearsed, never repeated.

We build musical conversations in real-time, letting themes emerge organically from the interplay between drums and keys, creating a living soundtrack to the moment.

Our Approach to Improvised Music

Fully improvised, always based on a theme, a story, or a conversation.

Counterparts creates spontaneous musical narratives where every performance is unique—never rehearsed, never repeated. We listen, respond, and build stories in real-time.

We search through the form of theme and variation—but theme can mean anything. A story overheard in conversation, a book that moved us, the weight of a feeling, the arc of a journey. We take these seeds and let them grow through musical dialogue, each voice responding to and transforming what the other offers. The drums might suggest a landscape while the keys paint the weather. Or the piano whispers a memory while percussion traces its emotional contours. Together, we discover where these themes want to go, following their natural evolution through improvised counterpoint.
